This is a breakdown of our tremendous team effort of the Barrel of Monkeys sequence in Iron Man 3. We combined matte painting, aerial photography, and 3d renders to create a master set up in nuke that was able to render the aerial environment 30000 feet up to about one thousand feet from the ground.
